The Collaborative Laboratories for Advanced Decommissioning Science (CLADS), Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), had been conducting the Nuclear Energy Science & Technology and Human Resource Development Project (hereafter referred to "the Project") in FY2020. The Project aims to contribute to solving problems in the nuclear energy field represented by the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (TEPCO). For this purpose, intelligence was collected from all over the world, and basic research and human resource development were promoted by closely integrating/collaborating knowledge and experiences in various fields beyond the barrier of conventional organizations and research fields. The sponsor of the Project was moved from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to JAEA since the newly adopted proposals in FY2018. On this occasion, JAEA constructed a new research system where JAEA-academia collaboration is reinforced and medium-to-long term research/development and human resource development contributing to the decommissioning are stably and consecutively implemented. Among the adopted proposals in FY2018, this report summarizes the research results of the "Development of semantic survey map building system using semi-autonomous mobile robots for surveying of disaster area and gathering of information in nuclear power station" conducted from FY2018 to FY2021 (this contract was extended to FY2021). Since the final year of this proposal was FY2021, the results for four fiscal years were summarized. The present study aims to research and develop semi-autonomous mobile robot systems (multi-sensor fusion system, semantic simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), system for traversable-route learning and safe traversable-route presentation, etc.) that simply, safely, and rapidly make semantic survey maps …

In this methodology, subcriticality is determined via the area ratio method (via the proton accelerator) in the first step and by the neutron source multiplication method (through the spontaneous fission neutrons of minor actinides) in subsequent steps; then, the number of fuel assemblies to be loaded in the next step is predicted. We performed a numerical simulation of the proposed methodology, and the estimated subcriticalities agreed well with those obtained by eigenvalue calculations. We also conducted an uncertainty assessment of the proposed methodology and deduced a value of 1000 pcm for the uncertainty. The proposed methodology can be a candidate for practical subcriticality monitoring for ADS.

The system will be applied to the investigation of the situation inside the building of the nuclear power station where people cannot access at the time of disaster.

In order to develop constitutive equations of two-fluid model in rod bundle flow channels, experiments of adiabatic air-water upward two-phase flow in 66 rod bundle flow channel were performed. Local flow parameters such as void fraction, interfacial area concentration (IAC) and so on were measured by a double-sensor optical probe. The area-averaged void fraction and IAC data were compared with the predictions from a drift-flux model and an IAC correlation.

An experimental study on the upward bubbly air-water flows in a vertical large-diameter square duct have been performed by using four-sensor probes. The four-sensor probe were applied in the local measurements at 3 axial positions along the flow direction to obtain interfacial area concentration, 3-D bubble velocity vector and bubble diameter. The obtained void fraction, interfacial area concentration, 3-D bubble velocity vector and bubble diameter provided valuable insight into the flow structure and will serve as a valuable database to develop the mechanistic models for interfacial area transport equation sources and sinks.

The four-sensor probe method classifying spherical and non-spherical bubbles was applied as a key measurement way to obtain local parameters such as 3-D bubble velocity vector, bubble diameter and interfacial area concentration. Both the local void fraction and interfacial area concentration indicated radial core-peak and wall-peak distributions at low and high liquid flow rates respectively. The 2 components of the bubble velocity vector in the cross-section revealed that there exists a rotating secondary flow in the octant symmetric triangular area and the magnitude of the rotating secondary flow increases with the liquid flow rate. Some of constitutive correlations of drift-flux model and interfacial area concentration are reviewed to study their predictabilities against the present data.

To investigate the void coefficient in the Reduced-Moderation Water Reactor (RMWR), an infinite multiplication factor was measured in the FCA-XXII-1 (65V) core. Axial and radial fission rate distributions were measured by micro fission chambers with four different kinds of nuclides. The infinite multiplication factor was derived from the material buckling, which was obtained from both the axial and radial fission rate distributions, and the migration area calculated. The value of it in the test region of the FCA-XXII-1 (65V) core was 1.3440.034. It was compared with the calculation, the ratio of the calculation to the measurement was 1.0080.026. The improvement in measurement accuracy was also considered.
